At least then you know that when its time to replace your bed, it will fit large mattresses like pillow tops & what not. I got this because there has been an outbreak in the apartment complex where I live. Not too sure how or where the bedbugs came from exactly, but it was starting to infest my couch. I know, they tell you not to throw it away but knowing they're there, camping out in the creases & coming out to feed, simply bothered me. So out went my couch & recliner. The one thing that I refuse to throw away are my Cal-King bed. However, the bedbugs didn't make home there (probably because we kept on the plastic) but just to be on the safe side, a bedbug proof cover was needed to stop the spread. We also invested in DE (diatomaceous earth (sp)) which, after some time, killed not only the bedbugs, but any bug. I don't bother with pest control & their pesticides & chemicals anymore... There are many more expensive encasement sets but this one works just fine. Some people have complained of tearing but we didn't experience any tearing when we encased our bed sets. We also bought their queen encasement set. I would suggest standing the mattress on its end and then sliding the cover down over top of it. It helped to squeeze the mattress together as you pulled it down in order to take the tension off the zipper. I am pleased with the encasement set--the only thing I would have liked better was if the velcro that covered the zipper was larger. The velcro barely is enough to cover the zipper and it's hard to get it to get the velcro to stick. This one fit perfectly on a just under 9" mattress from Ikea. It's snug and paper-thin. It does have a locking zipper and the material is soft enough that it will not make noise when moving on the mattress. After placing a mattress pad on top of it, the cover is completely undetectable. Packaging comes complete with instructions for what to do if the bed already has bugs or mites, as well as maintenance recommendations. I recommend as a precaution against what can be a really expensive issue! I had to put tape along the zipper and glue on the seams so that nothing can get in or out. Had more detail been listed, I would have chosen a different product. I was very careful to put on the encasement as instructed. Even so,both my husband and I ended up with tiny holes in the base where the corner protectors are. The fabric is too fragile for the area it protects. We taped up the corners with duct tape and prepared everything. We had to duct tape the holes which defeated the whole purpose of the protector. It is not worth the money. Find a product for the box spring that is tougher. It takes months to get rid of them but because I used this on my box spring I trapped them inside (I guess that was what happened) and since then the problem is gone. Before putting it on the box spring I cleaned and, vacuum and sprayed just in case there were eggs around. If you follow instructions it will not rip.
